practice your spider drill (this helps to improve quickness control etc) - put the ball on the ground and stand shoulder width apart over it (bend your knees - keep good balance). Tap the ball in front ONCE with one hand and ONCE with the other (do the same in the back). It should be L,R (front), L,R (back). Once you can continuously do that motion fast without the ball moving around, start to bounce the ball. Keep the ball bouncing as you do the drill and try to keep eyes up. Once you master that, do the same thing, but walking.

the tennis ball thing is correct. Get in a defensive stance and keep your eyes straight ahead. Toss the tennis ball up in the air and catch it with one hand when it comes down to eye level. DO NOT FOLLOW THE BALL - eyes stay straight ahead. Do this a couple times to get used it, then pick up your basketball and dribble in one hand WHILE tossing the tennis ball in the other. Don't pay attention to your dribbling - focus on just feeling the basketball. Alternate between dribbling high and low (you should always dribble low, but dribbling high is allowed in this). Keep your focus on catching the tennis ball - this helps you look up while dribbling and helps you feel the ball.
References :
been going to a basketball clinic for 8 years and its taught by the coach of the state's best basketball team
